Kirkwood’s Guest Chef Series travels in a new direction, exploring authentic flavors and rustic style of Mexico’s Yucatan region. The mother and daughter culinary team of Minelia Romero and Paulina Espinosa share their cooking styles at 6 p.m., Saturday, October 6, in The Hotel’s Executive Technology Amphitheater, 7725 Kirkwood Blvd. SW, Cedar Rapids.

At one time a significant region within the Mayan culture, the food of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula reflects a variety of flavors, textures, contrasts and colors. The menu will highlight authentic ingredients and preparation techniques through classical Yucatecan dishes such as Tamales Dzotobichay, Sopa de Lima (lime soup) and Pechuga de pollo pibil acompañado de arroz a la yucateca y frijol refrito (achioteracado-rubbed chicken cooked in banana leaves). The courses will also feature classical Yucatecan rice and the almond dessert of Cubilete de almendras. Guests will also learn how vanilla, cinnamon and ground rice feature as principal ingredients in the refreshing regional drink, Horchata.

The two and a half hour event involves multiple courses, with guests being served each demonstrated course. Cost is $50 per person and will have an additional-charge wine package available on the evening of the event.

For reservations, call 319-848-8770, by Friday, Sept. 21. Credit card payment by phone or payment by check will be accepted.

The event is being presented in partnership with Iowa Sister States and the Iowa-Yucatan Partners of the Americas. It is a program-sponsored fundraiser to defray the cost of food ingredients and provide both Kirkwood Hospitality students and the eastern Iowa community with increased cultural and culinary awareness.
