Funds for Kirkwood-based project available for youth ages 16-21 who meet guidelines

A jobs-experience program that put scores of area young people to work last year will be back again for 2010. Kirkwood Community College was recently notified that funds providing supervised work settings for area 16-21 year olds has been allocated for the college’s Kirkwood Creating Futures program.

The summer youth jobs program will support up to 40 hours of work a week and earnings of $8 per hour. The program will support work from July 6 through September 15, 2010. Eligible youth should be between 16 and 21 and meet income eligibility guidelines.

All youth must be U.S. citizens and living with at least one parent or other relative. Males aged 18 and above must also be registered with Selective Service. A work readiness and safety training segment is required of all young people taking part in the project.

Young people may apply by picking up an application at either Creating Futures office: Cedar Rapids: 1030 Fifth Avenue SE, Suite 2300; or Iowa City: 1700 South First Avenue, Suite 22.

All interested youth are asked to begin the process by filling out an application. The Creating Futures team will then follow up with all applications to review eligibility and set up interviews. Applications are due by June 9, with interviews to follow.

Interested youth may also call for more information: 319.398.5070, Ext 134.

Participants will be eligible for work at both non-profit and for-profit job locations. Area employers interested in participating with the summer jobs program are encouraged to call Carla Andorf at Kirkwood Community College: 319-398-5105.
