Assistant Coach Bryan Petersen to become interim head basketball coach

Kirkwood Athletic Director and Men’s Head Basketball Coach Doug Wagemester has decided to step away from coaching the men’s basketball team to focus on the Athletic Director duties. Current Assistant Coach Bryan Petersen will move into an interim head-coaching role starting this offseason.

Moving from courtside gives Wagemester a chance to take a step back, evaluate how the department functions and guide Kirkwood athletics to new heights. Wagemester will review the department restructuring in one year’s time to ensure that the move has made Kirkwood athletics a stronger entity in the NJCAA.

Petersen brings valuable experience and a solid educational background to Johnson Hall. As a former Kirkwood Eagle, he was a First-Team Division II Junior College All American. He then moved on to play division one basketball for Iowa State. Following his playing career, Petersen was a part of a coaching staff that took the Cyclones to the NCAA tournament. He also earned a masters degree from Iowa State in Educational Leadership.

In addition to the interim head coach position, Petersen will take on duties as an admissions advisor as well.
