I.C. Campus Plans Earth Day Events

Kirkwood Community College’s Iowa City campus will celebrate Earth Day on Wednesday, April 22 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. More than 60 different environmental displays by students and community environmental groups are set for the day.

Several student clubs will sponsor fundraisers including the Environmental Club’s book sale, Phi Theta Kappa soup sale, as well as a general fundraiser for Mark Twain grade school through sales of recycled jewelry and plants.

A noon barbecue will feature both meat and vegetarian fare. In addition, food samples will include Guido’s soups with New Pioneer coffee, bars, and various barbecued brats and other hors d’oeuvres. The Guido’s Deli fare will also be available in the Commons area.

Some of the community groups on hand with displays will include; Iowa Department of Natural Resources, the University of Iowa Field Campus Raptor Center, Iowa City Landfill & Recycling Center, Johnson County Public Health, Iowa Bike Coalition, Hickory Hill, Iowa City Bird Club, Blue Planet Earth, Resources for Life, Kirkwood’s Environmental Training Center, and Taproot.

Some of the many student displays will cover subjects like composting, zero waste, landfill technologies, Nature Deficit Disorder, non-toxic household cleaners, hemp products, cloth shopping bags, alternative building and energy, eco fashion, living with less, water quality, and biking.

Everyone is invited to join the festivities which will include a drawing at noon with lots of creative environmental prizes. The public is welcome to join in the Earth Day events on Lower Muscatine Road.
