Kirkwood hosts “Start! Linn County” Heart Walk, Aug. 9

Recommit to living healthy today and help stomp out the leading cause of death in the Linn County area by participating in the American Heart Association’s Start! Linn County Heart Walk on Saturday, August 9, at Kirkwood Community College. Events will start in front of RuffaloCODY and the Michael J Gould Kirkwood Recreation Center.

The walk route is approximately 3.2 miles with the option to walk a one-mile loop. Registration and festivities begins at 8 a.m. and the walk starts at 9 a.m.

The Heart Walk is a noncompetitive walking event and is free and open to the public. Race organizers encourage attendance of families and pets. The event features a Kids Zone, the live music of “Adam Hoffman and Ice Tea Tall Boys,” plus interactive educational displays on eating right, exercising and heart health.

The first 100 families will receive CPR Anytime Kits. Family & Friends CPR Anytime is a self-directed, personal CPR kit that makes learning the core skills of CPR easy, convenient, affordable and fun for the whole family. It takes just 22 minutes to learn and can be done anywhere. (This kit does not provide certification in CPR.)

Proceeds from the Heart Walk, the American Heart Association’s largest fundraiser, help fund cardiovascular research and community education programs for adults and children. In the corridor alone the American Heart Association supports research and education to the tune of almost $7 million dollars.

This event also celebrates survivors of heart disease and stroke by honoring them with special red caps to wear at the event to show the prevalence of cardiovascular disease in the community. There are also tribute stickers to wear to honor those who have fought heart disease and stroke and won and to memorialize those who have not been as fortunate.
