Algona’s Tim Lind earns silver in SkillsUSA Competition

A Kirkwood Community College student has beaten his personal best in national competition.

Tim Lind of Algona competed in the Sheet Metal competition at SkillsUSA Nationals 2008 and took home the silver medal. The 44th annual event welcomed more than 5,000 contestants in 93 categories.

In 2006-07 Lind was in Kirkwood’s Plumbing program and took the bronze medal in last years national competition. He just finished his studies in Plumbing and also was in Kirkwood’s HVAC Installer program this past year, which led him to excel in the Sheet Metal category at state and national levels.

Currently Lind is working for Speck Plumbing, Inc. in Ames, as a plumbing apprentice. Lind is gaining lots of experience in commercial and residential plumbing, capping his Kirkwood graduation and Dean’s List honors for the Spring 2008 semester.

Kirkwood’s other four SkillsUSA competitors performed quite admirably. Joanne Abbas competed in Carpentry, James Crow competed in Electronics Technology, Eric Thompson placed 5th in the Plumbing contest, and Bob Read competed in Masonry.

Plumbing Instructor John Williams was one of the faculty at the competition. He called the SkillsUSA event “excellent for students, faculty and business partners alike. The caliber of the plumbing work performed by many of the students and the medal winners was outstanding,” Williams observed.

“Overall, Iowa did very well this year, medal-wise. Community College students took home three gold, four silver, and two bronze,” said Industrial Technology Coordinator Andrea Clark.
