Freedom Fest Fireworks ARE on for Kirkwood

July 4 evening show will keep the tradition alive; Balloon Glow event also re-set

[June 25] –Cedar Rapids Freedom Festival leaders reiterated today that as earlier announced its popular Balloon Glow event sponsored by Linn Area Credit Union has been postponed from June 26, to September 5. A Freedom Festival 2008 Presented by Mediacom button will be required for admission. Festival buttons are still available at local button outlets including Casey’s General Stores, CostCutters, Hy-Vee Food Stores & Drug Stores and Lindale Mall.

Freedom Festival also announced that it will be producing a fireworks display sponsored by Rockwell Collins on the Kirkwood Community College campus on July 4th. Fireworks will begin at 9:45 pm, with gates opening at 7:30 pm.

The fireworks display is scheduled for 9:45 p.m. Kirkwood officials recommend arriving after 8 p.m. and parking in Linn Hall or North Campus lots. Overflow parking will be available at Prairie High School. The main and south Kirkwood entrances will be open but the “north loop” entrance near the Recreation Center will be closed. People who would like to sit in lawn chairs are encouraged to use the Linn Hall East parking lot area.

No alcoholic beverages are allowed on campus; and, no open flame or charcoal grilling equipment is permitted. No personal fireworks or pets are permitted on the venue. In addition, patrons are reminded that the entire Kirkwood campus is tobacco-free.

Free glow sticks will be presented, while quantities last, to Freedom Festival button wearers and to donors to the Flood Relief Fund kettle on-site.

Free music entertainment by Enoch Smoky featuring Dickie Douglas, Billy Lee Janey, Eric Douglas and Dan Johnson will be provided for individuals waiting to view the fireworks. Music accompanying the fireworks display will be broadcast by KDAT, KHAK and KMRY radio stations.

Fireworks patrons are encouraged to bring along a portable radio to tune to one of these stations to further enhance their enjoyment of the fireworks.

Free music entertainment will be provided for individuals.
Festival staff indicated its traditional large July 4th fireworks display launched from the downtown location has been postponed to Labor Day, and will include the usual wide range of activities. Full details to be announced later.
