Kirkwood Jazz Transit and RSVP performs spring concert

Kirkwood Community College’s student jazz vocalists take the stage once again for a Spring Fling themed concert on April 27. The RSVP and Jazz Transit groups will present music from many well-known composers in Ballantyne Auditorium starting at 7:30 p.m.

Under the direction of Ray Salucka, Kirkwood RSVP will perform a dozen-plus popular a cappella works from Paul Simon, Ella Fitzgerald, Bobby McFerrin and more. Some of the tunes will feature rhythm accompaniment from Salucka at the piano; Ian Draves, bass; Lucas Jack, drums; and Emily Routier, auxiliary percussion.

The Jazz Transit will perform well-known songs like, “Baby You Can Drive My Car,” by The Beatles and the gospel hymn, “His Eye is on the Sparrow,” by Lauryn Hill.

Kirkwood’s vocal jazz groups have built a renowned reputation in college performance circles, with invitations to perform at jazz festivals around the world in the past decade. The Jazz Transit’s most recent accomplishment includes an invitation to attend the International Festival of Academic Choirs at Pardubice University in the Czech Republic. The group won a gold medal at the event five years ago.

Tickets for the April 27 vocal jazz concert are $10 for adults and $5 for seniors and students with current ID. Kirkwood employees and students are admitted free. Tickets are available at the door.
