Classes, student services continue as downtown center gets post-flood repairs

As a large number of government and business entities have migrated to Kirkwood Community College facilities in Cedar Rapids for temporary homes, the college operation in Vinton has accepted a returned favor. Kirkwood Vinton Center operations have moved to the Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School building while the college’s downtown Vinton Center is repaired from the recent flooding. The Center operations are located in the library and ICN room.

Kirkwood Benton County Director Mindy Thornton says the relocation to 212 W. 15th Street makes it possible to continue the college credit classes and student services.

“Thanks to great community partners, and outstanding contributions from members of our own campus community, we’re getting back to normal—even in our temporary location. Students are currently able to view classes they missed through Video on Demand technology, and we’re hopeful that all of our distance learning classes will be up and running very soon. We are grateful to the school district for allowing us this space and resources to continue Kirkwood operations. We’ve been touched by the support from our community, our staff, and our students” she said.

Thornton also emphasized that the high school completion/GED program is available at the temporary location. Meg Walker will be available to meet with students at the Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School Library during the following hours:

• Tuesdays, 9:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.;

• Wednesdays, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m, and 5 to 7:30 p.m.; and

• Thursdays, 9:30 a.m- to 2:45 p.m.

Kirkwood Vinton Center hours at the school building are:

• Mondays and Wednesdays, 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.;

• Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and

• Fridays, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Kirkwood officials hope to announce Vinton Center re-opening plans by August 1.

“Until then, we’ll continue to meet the needs of our students, and our community from our temporary location” Thornton added.

The Kirkwood Vinton Center phone number remains the same: (319) 472-2318.
