It took extra innings to bounce the Eagles from the NJCAA Division II National Tournament on Friday. Kirkwood won the first two games in the tournament, beating the Community College of Baltimore County 10-1 and Illinois Central College 3-2. Friday wasn’t the Eagles’ day. In their first game they lost to reigning national champions Phoenix College, 2-1. In the following elimination game, Kirkwood lost a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning, losing the game in the ninth frame 3-2.

The Kirkwood softball team had its best season ever this year, going 57-5, including a 50-game win-streak that ended Friday. The Eagles were the third seed in the tournament, entering with the highest winning percentage (.946) of all national tournament qualifiers and leading the nation in multiple categories including runs scored (524), homeruns (101), walks (218) and opponent batting average (.176). This was the team’s 11th national tournament appearance.
