$1.6 Million NSF Grant to enhance Kirkwood-based Ag Resource Center

A national center for agriculture education based at Kirkwood Community College has received renewed funding. AgrowKnowledge, the National Center for Agriscience & Technology Education received additional funds from the National Science Foundation totaling $1,600,000. This funding will support the AgrowKnowledge Resource Center.

Iowa Rep. David Loebsack made the grant announcement Friday, May 23. “I am proud to announce funding to enhance the innovative AgrowKnowledge program at Kirkwood,” said Congressman Loebsack. “Providing our students with cutting edge agricultural knowledge is an important part of keeping the younger generation in Iowa.”

AgrowKnowledge is a national partnership of community colleges that aims to arm students with the knowledge necessary to meet the increasing demand for high-tech careers in such areas as precision agriculture, biotechnology, alternative energy production, natural resource management and food production.

Kirkwood Vice President, Instruction Dr. Bill Lamb said, “NSF funding of the AgrowKnowledge Resource Center allows us to build on the successes and the lessons learned the past seven years, creating a nationally recognized organization for enhancing two-year, postsecondary education in agriculture food and natural resources. AgrowKnowledge will lead the preparation of teachers and students in the use of agricultural technology.”
