Stacy Sturdevant

Tell us a little about Stacy, please. Where was high school, family, etc.?: I graduated in 1983 from Washington High School in Washington, Iowa. I graduated from the Graphic Arts program at Kirkwood in 1984. Then I worked at a print shop in Iowa City until 1986, when I decided to attend Morningside College in Sioux City. I am blessed with three children–two daughters and a son, ages 21 to 25. I also have a beautiful granddaughter and grandson, plus two amazing sons-in-law. My mother, Linda still lives in Washington and my younger brother lives in Bettendorf, Iowa with his family.

What went on in your life from the 1980s and your first Kirkwood education, to now?: My former husband and I farmed for most of our 25 years together. He worked for a large agricultural corporation involved with pork production. We seemed to move around a lot with his job transfers. I have been a graphic artist, printing press operator, financial and livestock accountant, sales clerk, pizza maker, farmer, building & zoning official, administrative assistant, and most importantly a mother. I have been blessed with a supportive and loving family and great friends! It is they that have helped me get to this point in my life. I wake up every day and thank the stars that I am able to continue with my education and achieve my dreams.

Do you remember when you decided to return to college?: I have always known that I would one day return to earn my bachelor’s degree. I have had a hard time trying to figure out what I wanted to be when I grow up. (Laughs.) When my last child graduated from high school and left for college. It was then that I decided it was time for me to take care of me. Now was my time! I had been focusing on everyone else for so long I forgot about my own dreams and ambitions.

What have been a few “best days” at Kirkwood so far?: The day Dr. Jennifer Bradley announced that I had been named to the All-Iowa Academic Team would be at the top of my list. However, every day that I learn and experience something new is also a “best day!”

What are your plans after Kirkwood?: I am planning on attending the University of Iowa in the fall of 2014 and work to earn my Bachelor’s degree in History. I love history.

Stacy, imagine it’s the spring of 2019…..five years from now. Where are you, and what are you doing?: I see myself completing my Master’s degree, walking across the stage to accept my diploma, and looking out in to the audience and seeing the faces of my family. Then, being offered a great job…maybe even at the Smithsonian!
