Area kids, ages 9 – 15, can spend weeks this summer having fun, while exploring careers through Kirkwood Interactive Camps for Kids (K.I.C.K.). The camps run June through August and are designed to fit into busy family schedules.

This year Kirkwood is offering 109 classes. Courses run the gamut of topics, from designing rockets and video games to cooking and weather prediction. K.I.C.K. camps are designed to build positive experiences across the spectrum of knowledge and career possibilities, with many camps focusing on careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The goal is to spark interest, improve learning skills and foster leadership. Kirkwood’s catalog breaks down the classes to assist with career exploration.

“Minecraft and LEGO classes are most popular,” says Program Developer, Kristin Hanneman, “These classes have filled very quickly.”

Kirkwood offers morning and afternoon sessions that range from single to weekly sessions. Most camps take place on Kirkwood’s main campus and at the Newbo Market in Cedar Rapids, and also in Iowa City. Tuition assistance is available for students who are eligible for the federal free school lunch program on a first come, first serve basis. Applications are available at www.kirkwood.edu/kick or by calling 319-398-7768.

Last year nearly 1100 kids participated in K.I.C.K.
