Cedar Rapids, Iowa (September 2, 2014)—Kirkwood Community College in collaboration with the City of Cedar Rapids, now offers Historic Preservation classes. These course offerings were created as one of many mitigation projects the City has completed in agreement with FEMA as a result of the 2008 flood event. They have been developed as part of the effort to help restore and preserve Cedar Rapids’ heritage.

“We are very excited to see these courses offered in the community,” says Amanda McKnight-Grafton, chair of the Cedar Rapids Historic Preservation Commission. “As the community continues to work together on preserving and maintaining our historic landmarks, the availability of professional courses such as these will only serve to strengthen our efforts.”

Historical buildings give people a visual from the past and to help gain understanding of how things could possibly play out in the future. This understanding makes one feel more connected to the community. The trend of historic preservation has been growing in recent years creating more demand for craftsmen.

Short courses are a great way for someone who is currently working on the fringes of historical preservation to pick up the knowledge necessary to become a specialist. Real estate agents, craftspeople, historians, homeowners and architects are just a few of the individuals who can take advantage of these mini-programs.

Kirkwood offers a series of classes for both the Historic Preservation Interior and Exterior certificates. Classes range from preservation planning to products and practices for cleaning and repointing mortar.

According to Program Developer Carlton Goodwin, “Students will receive discounted tuition for taking the certificate programs as a series, rather than individually. The Kirkwood certificate is a great addition for the resume.”
