Saddle Up Youth Days set for September 26-28
Young riders will have the opportunity to show their horses in a first-class, nationally known facility this weekend at the Second Annual Saddle Up Youth Horse Show. The beginner-friendly event, happening September 26-28 at The Iowa Equestrian Center at Kirkwood Community College, promotes competition and fellowship among participants.
Saddle Up Youth Days is a weekend-long event designed to give younger riders a chance to compete in a variety of contests as well as other games and events. To make it positive, prizes will be given out for every class and everyone participating will receive a ribbon. According to Center Coordinator Liz Lindner, there is a big emphasis on providing an encouraging experience for everyone.
“It’s an event where kids can have fun while learning in a top-notch, nationally-recognized facility,” said Lindner. “Last year’s show was a great success and we got a lot of positive feedback. The number of participants is up over 20 percent from last year. I think the word has spread about what a fun and welcoming event it is.”
This year’s activities will include “hunter jumper” courses intended to give riders an opportunity to try jumping their horses over a series of obstacles. The obstacles will differ depending on the skill of the rider. Novice riders will be able to participate as well as those with a little more experience.
In addition to the horse-related activities through the weekend, Saddle Up Youth Days will also include free, non-horse related games for all kids in attendance. The games give spectators an opportunity to get involved in the fun as well.
“Having this show at Kirkwood is just a really good fit,” said Director of Equine Operations and Events, Patrick Klatt. “We want to promote youth, horses and all things equestrian with this event. It’s an opportunity to get people on Kirkwood’s campus and show them how great the programs and facilities are here.”
