Cedar Rapids, Iowa (April 21, 2015)–Kirkwood Community College was selected as a State of Iowa Higher Education Institute Green Ribbon School by the Iowa Department of Education. This advances Kirkwood as a nominee to the federal level for the U.S. Department of Education’s Green Ribbon School designation that will be announced on April 22.

The award recognizes schools, districts and Iowa higher education facilities that utilize exemplary practices and resources in sustainability and environmental procedures. Nominees at the state level must demonstrate achievement in three categories, collectively known as pillars. Those pillars include:

  • Reduce environmental impact and costs
  • Improve the health and wellness of schools, students and staff
  • Provide environmental education, which teaches many disciplines, and is especially good at effectively incorporating STEM, civic skills and green career pathways

These pillars help to support the postsecondary goals of reduced college costs, increased completion rates, higher rates of employment, and robust civic skills among graduates.
