College invites the community to anniversary celebration Tuesday, Feb. 9

Washington, Iowa (February 3, 2016)-Kirkwood Community College will host a 50th anniversary celebration in part with the Washington Chamber of Commerce event, Alive After 5. The event will take place Tuesday, February 9, at the Washington County Regional Center, 2192 Lexington Boulevard, from 5 to 7 p.m.

Kirkwood has been a presence and influence in the Washington area since 1968, offering classes for skilled trades. Over the years and still today, the college serves as a resource for dislocated workers providing counseling, training and retraining. High school completion has also been offered since the beginning.

In 2014, thanks to the generosity of the Washington community, especially the Jim and Margaret Dunn family, Kirkwood opened the Washington County Regional Center. The facility expanded educational opportunities to high school students offering dual enrollment at no cost. Students gain hands-on career experience while earning college credit. More than 5,200 credit hours have been earned by area high school students since opening in 2014.

The 50th celebration/Alive After 5 event is open to the public. Guests can tour the facility, enjoy refreshments and learn about the evolution of community college classes through community partnership.

“We are reminded every day of what can be accomplished when Kirkwood and our communities work together,” said Washington County Regional Center Director Tera Pickens. “As a Kirkwood graduate myself, I know about the solid start I got and how hundreds of Washington area students and residents can move ahead thanks to this center and our people. We invite everyone to join us as we plan for more good things to come.”
