Kirkwood Jazz Transit and RSVP present “Pass me the Jazz”

Kirkwood Community College’s student jazz vocalists take the stage once again this fall presenting music from many well-known composers. The RSVP and Jazz Transit groups will perform on Friday, November 18, at 7:30 p.m. in Ballantyne Auditorium. The dozen-plus a cappella tunes in the program reflect popular styles ranging from Broadway selections to pop tunes from the 1950’s and 60’s.

Under the direction of Ray Salucka, Kirkwood RSVP will perform popular works like “The Frim Fran Sauce,” and “It’s Sand Man,” by Nat King Cole and “In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning,” by Frank Sinatra. The Kirkwood Jazz Transit will perform well-known hits “Blackbird” and “Back in the U.S.S.R.” by the Beatles and “Pass Me the Jazz” by The Real Group.

The concert mainly showcases the groups’ a cappella talents, but some tunes will feature rhythm accompaniment from Salucka at the piano; Dennis McPartland, drums; and Ian Draves, bass.

Kirkwood’s vocal jazz groups have built a renowned reputation in college performance circles, with invitations to perform at jazz festivals in the Czech Republic and Switzerland in the past decade. The RSVP and Jazz Transit ensembles have also earned awards and honors in competitions from California to New York.

Tickets for the November 18 vocal jazz concert are $10 for adults and $5 for seniors and students with current ID. Kirkwood students and employees are admitted free. For advance tickets, please call (319) 398-5899 ext. 4331.
