Kirkwood to Celebrate International Week Nov. 14-18

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (November 9, 2016)-Kirkwood Community College will be celebrating International Week from Nov. 14-18 on Kirkwood’s campuses in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City.

Various events are scheduled during the annual weeklong celebration to promote the importance of international education. According to Dawn Wood, director of International Programs, the cultural diversity and global opportunities on campus benefit the entire Kirkwood community.

“International Week at Kirkwood is an opportunity to learn from the different cultures represented and to experience global learning that prepares our students for today’s global environment,” said Wood. “It’s a celebration of our differences, and an opportunity to share and learn with each other to better understand our global community through each unique student’s heritage.”

The schedule of events is as follows:

  • Monday, Nov. 14, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.
    • International Programs Coffee and Tea Time – Enjoy coffee and tea tastings from around the world. Location: Linn Hall room 1154
  • Tuesday, Nov. 15, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
    • International Showcase – International students and cultural groups will showcase the cultural diversity of their countries. Location: The Café in Iowa Hall
  • Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2:30 – 3:30 p.m.
    • Funding Study Abroad Workshop – Students meet with the Study Abroad advisor and former study abroad students to learn how they financed their study abroad experience. Location: Linn Hall room 1152
  • Thursday, Nov. 17, 11:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.
    • Speaker Andy Stoll: “Leadership Lessons From A Trip Around the World” – Insightful stories and strategies for leaders gleaned from traveling when there is no map. Location: Ballantyne Auditorium
  • Thursday, Nov. 17, 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
    • International Showcase – International students and cultural groups will showcase the cultural diversity of their countries. Location: Iowa City Campus commons area
  • Friday, Nov. 17, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. and 7 – 9 p.m.
    • Phi Theta Kappa Event – Think You Know Africa? Come Play With Us! – Kirkwood’s honor society chapter, Phi Theta Kappa, presents an Africa fair to promote increased understanding of the different cultures and economies of the continent. Location: Linn Hall Lobby

International Week at Kirkwood is just one of the college’s efforts to promote cultural awareness and understanding. This semester, nearly 400 international students attend classes at Kirkwood. The college is ranked in the top four institutions nationally for the number of students studying abroad at a two-year college.
