CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (November 29, 2016)-Kirkwood Community College Energy Production and Distribution student Michael Sammons has been awarded a 2016 Terry O’Banion Student Technology Award from the League for Innovation in the Community College.

The 2016 Terry O’Banion Student Technology Award recipients were chosen based on a handful of criteria including a demonstrated passion for technology, career interest in a technological field and commitment to their education and community.

According to Kirkwood instructor Chad Daugherty, Sammons is one of his best students and well deserving of the award.

“I am extremely proud of Mike,” said Daugherty. “He is a joy to have in class. I am always impressed by his attitude and motivation. In the 14 years that I have been here at Kirkwood, I have never met a student who has embraced his education so enthusiastically. He has challenged me as an educator and has inspired me as well. I am very glad he received this award.”

Sammons accepted the award at the 2016 STEMtech conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in early November. He received a $2,500 scholarship to use toward educational expenses.
