Kirkwood to Meet Project Management Training Demand

Program addresses requirements in bill sponsored by U.S. Senator Joni Ernst

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (December 19, 2016)-Kirkwood Community College is ready to meet the demand for project management training expected after the passage of the Program Management Improvement and Accountability Act, which was signed into law by President Obama on December 14. The bipartisan bill, co-sponsored by U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA), calls for enhanced training and educational opportunities for program managers.

To meet this demand, Kirkwood offers a five-class, 15-credit hour certificate program that covers the basics of project management. According to Kirkwood instructor Sandy O’Brien, in addition to filling the need set forth in the new law, the certificate gives students a competitive edge.

“The project management certificate at Kirkwood offers students a valuable option not available to most students at the community college level,” said O’Brien. “Students learn the language of project management as well as processes and procedures that are integral to the field. A distinct advantage exists for employees with a solid understanding of project management.”

Taught by a staff that includes four Project Management Institute certified professionals, a hands-on approach is utilized throughout the courses in the certificate. Students learn project management basics and industry software tools and techniques, including lean process improvement, agile project management techniques, and problem solving skills through the use of case studies.

Those interested in learning more about Kirkwood’s Project Management Certificate are encouraged to contact the Kirkwood Business and IT office at (319)398-5416.

Spring classes begin on January 17.
