CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (February 14, 2017)-Kirkwood Community College will host the sixth annual East Central Iowa Safety and Health Conference on Thursday, February 23, 2017, at the Kirkwood Center on main campus in Cedar Rapids. The conference will address topics designed to prevent workplace injuries and accidents.

Improving workplace safety can save U.S. employers billions of dollars. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics workplace injuries and accidents cost employers $62 billion in 2013. In 2016 the department identified Iowa as having an above average rating for nonfatal injury and illness cases compared to the national average.

“Research shows that workplace injury and death is preventable,” said Program Developer David Hughes. “Employee education and establishing protocols are vital. Businesses experience increased productivity and higher job satisfaction among staff by weaving workforce safety into their culture.”

Last year, more than 220 attended the safety and health conference. During the one-day conference, chemical plant explosion survivor Garrison Wynn will share his personal story and safety experience to motivate others to think and act safely. More than 17 breakout sessions will be offered. Topics include accident prevention, mental health safety, active shooter response, electrical safety and multiple sessions on proven safety programs. Participants can learn about the industry’s latest products and services and earn continuing education units.
