CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (June 6, 2017)-Kirkwood Community College Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence, Dr. Pedro Sanchez-Escobedo, will hold an eight-hour mental health workshop for healthcare providers on June 13 and 14. The workshop is designed to help providers identify underlying mental health issues with illness.

The workshop, Basic Mental Health Clinical Skills for Healthcare Practitioners, will meet on two consecutive evenings at the college. Participants will learn the basic tools to identify, assess and appropriately refer patients who, in addition to their physical complaint, may have a mental health issue. Basic clinical mental health assessment skills will be developed though presentations, group discussions and role playing. The workshop will cover principles of mental health and wellness; psychiatric disorders and adjustment issues; benefits and side effects of psychopharmacology; and intervention and referral of mental health issues.

PsychCentral.com identifies such a relationship noting people with depression often have worse physical health, as well as worse self-perceived health, than those without depression. Conversely, those with chronic physical disease suffer more psychological distress than healthy people.

“We are so fortunate to bring Dr. Sanchez’s expertise to the area,” said Kirkwood Continuing Education Allied Health Program Director Laura Daman. “His workshops are ideal for nurses, therapists, social workers, EMS providers and other healthcare professionals.”

Dr. Sanchez is a senior lecturer from the University of Yucatan, where he is currently a full professor and leading psychology researcher. He has published 14 books and more than 100 original research manuscripts. Dr. Sanchez is best known for the standardization processes and norm development of the three major intelligence scales widely used for clinical and educational settings in Mexico.
