October Student of the Month: Zach Sherwood

What is your background?: I was born and raised in Benton County in a small development about four minutes away from the town of Norway. I grew up with my mom and dad, Chad and Kris Sherwood, and my younger brother Keaton. I went to Benton Community High School and graduated in 2014.

What brought you to Kirkwood and why?: I came to Kirkwood because it was close to where I had grown up and because I knew the Cedar Rapids area pretty well. It also had the classes I needed.

What is your program of study and what interests you about it?: I am currently in the Liberal Arts Program. My plan is to get all of the general requirements done and then hopefully transfer to UNI where I plan to major in Physical Education.

Are you involved in anything else on campus? If so, what and why?: I’m actually a Morale Captain for Kirkwood Dance Marathon, which is an organization that helps raise money for children’s hospitals. As a Morale Captain my job is to try to recruit students and encourage student members to reach their fundraising goals. I got involved because I wanted to become more involved at the college. I also wanted to make a difference for those outside of campus and Dance Marathon was perfect for that.

Are you involved in anything off of campus?: During the summer I do volunteer work for Four Oaks’ Autism Program. We help teach 4th-12th grade kids with autism social norms and etiquette while preparing them to be capable of living lives on their own. It was this work that made me want to pursue a job that involves working with kids.

What do you do for fun?: I like to listen to music, watch Netflix, surf the web and go for long walks when the weather is nice. I also like to go out and see new places. I’m really interested in being able to go on the study abroad trip to Ireland this summer.

Where do you see yourself in five years?: After Kirkwood, I see myself as a graduate of UNI, getting a job at a school here in Iowa and continuing to make a difference in the world.
