Sam Salomone Trio joins student ensembles for a night of jazz and blues
Kirkwood Community College begins the fall Performing Arts series on Saturday, October 1 with the 12th Annual Blues Concert, featuring the Sam Salomone Trio. Chicago born, Tama raised Sam Salomone will lead the guest band in Ballantyne Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. The guest performers will appear with the Kirkwood Jazz Ensemble and CR Jazz Big Band. Several Kirkwood student combos will also perform traditional blues and original works. Kirkwood Instrumental Jazz Director Timothy Feldkamp will direct the evening’s music.
With more than four decades of performing experience, Salomone has established himself as a famed jazz and blues performer. He was inducted into the Iowa Blues Hall of Fame, as well as the Iowa Jazz Hall of Fame. After his induction into the Blues Hall of Fame, Salomone stated, “A lot of people think of me as a Jazz guy, so it was a nice surprise to be noticed for the blues.”
Salomone began his quest as a musician by moving to Des Moines to find band mates interested in Rock-and-Roll. After local success, Salomone had the opportunity to tour with Del Shannon and The Duprees in the 1960s. He has continued to play and record since then, producing his own album It’s Never Too Late in 1997. Salomone has performed with the Des Moines Big Band, and Iowa Rock and Roll and Blues Hall of Fame artist BillyLee Janey.
