Tell us about Betsy, please—your family and growing up: I grew up in Sioux City, Iowa and went to Bishop Heelan Catholic High School, graduating in 2003. I have a sister who is two years older than me and she has two little girls, Isabella and Lillian. In high school I was involved in volleyball, soccer and track. I was also a member of the Mission Club. We collected money and provided meals for families around the holidays and volunteered for Habitat for Humanity.

What got you interested in Interior Design as a career?: I’ve have always loved fashion and clothing and putting together unusual and interesting complements. I started having an interest in design at a very young age. I’ve never been afraid to be bold and go in different directions with color and fabrics. I’ve also painted for my mom’s design company and worked for my aunt and her partner’s business. I brought many ideas to both.

What’s been the best part of Kirkwood for you so far?: My top experience at Kirkwood would be the faculty that has worked so hard with me to get back to being a student and finding my niche. They always go above and beyond and never give up on me.

What’s going on for you now, in terms of jobs and life?: I’m about to start my last year of college. I’m interning at Phelan’s Interiors, helping with both commercial and residential projects. I also work on many painting projects at the Midwest Athletic Club’s six locations. And, I enjoy spending time with my beautiful puppy, Francisco. None of this would’ve ever happened if it wasn’t for my encouraging boyfriend, Curtis. He’s always there for me no matter what!

Imagine that it is the fall of 2018. What are you doing?: In five years I’ll have a business of my own that has something to do with design and helping others.
