Heritage Agency offers workshops tuned to the needs of family, friends who care for seniors

The Heritage Area Agency on Aging will offer two fall Caregiver Education sessions, October 13 and November 9. As part of an ongoing series, these two free workshops are designed for caregivers providing support for older adults. Both fall sessions will be offered at the Milestones Adult Day Health Center, 1725 O Avenue NW in Cedar Rapids.

The latest sessions in the Caregiver Education series include:

• “ID Theft, Schemes and Scams and the Caregiver,” Wednesday, Oct. 13, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Nevin Meredith of the Linn County TRIAD group will outline some of the more common and pervasive ways seniors may fall victim to various illegal activities, and ways caregivers can be on the lookout for potential risks to those in their care. TRIAD is a partnership of county and city law enforcement, plus other organizations and individuals involved with older adult issues of safety and well-being.

• “Holiday Stress and the Caregiver” is set for Tuesday, November 9, 4 to 5 p.m. Guest speaker is Sara Sanders, assistant professor in the School of Social Work at The University of Iowa. Sanders will describe how the usually joyful and involving holiday season can pose stress on seniors and their families.

Registration for these sessions is free, with participants requested to call with RSVP to ensure adequate information and materials: (319) 398-5559, or toll-free: 800-332-5934.
