June Student of the Month: Takia Wade

By May 31, 2017October 25th, 2018No Comments

What is your background?: I was born and raised in Aurora, Illinois where the majority of my family lives. I came to Iowa in 2012 after I graduated from West Aurora High School. The state was far enough away that I could experience something different, but also see family on a regular basis. After moving here, I completed my Bachelors of Art in Health and Human Physiology at the University of Iowa.

What brought you to Kirkwood and why?: I enrolled in Kirkwood because of their great Occupational Therapy Assistant program. I knew that I wanted to go into occupational therapy Before I graduated from the university, so I started searching for programs. I heard about OTA at Kirkwood through an advisor, and afterwards met with the director of the program.

What is your program of study and what interests you about it?: I am in the Occupational Therapy Assistant program, and I am really enjoying learning more and more about everything occupational therapy has to offer. It interests me because my desire has always been to help people in my career. I really love how patient focused occupational therapy is, and how every treatment method and decision that is made revolves around the wants and needs of the patient.

Are you involved in anything else on campus? If so, what and why?: I am the president of Kirkwood Student Occupational Therapy Assistant club. This club strives to advocate for occupational therapy within the community to spread awareness about the practice and how many people can benefit from it.

What do you do for fun?: I enjoy reading in my spare time, along with socializing with friends and spending time outdoors.

Where do you see yourself in five years?: In five years, I plan to be practicing as a certified occupational therapy assistant in the Midwest while looking, if not already enrolled, in a COTA/OT transitional program.
