Kirkwood offers series of refresher/re-licensure courses in Jones County

For local electricians, maintenance personnel and other professionals in the field, Kirkwood Community College has scheduled a series of courses to keep up with skills and knowledge in the electrical trades. The December classes cover some of the most important updates and rules, plus refreshers on key areas of electrical applications.

All courses are set for the Jones Regional Education Center in Monticello, near Highway 151. The courses will be led by Master Electrician Richard Chambers. He has worked as an Iowa electrician since the 1970s. Chambers taught electrical courses in Iowa community colleges since 1980 and at Kirkwood since 1991.

• The “National Electrical Code Update” class on December 4 will explain key parts of the 2008 NEC rule changes. Hundreds of rule amendments include new sizing requirements, services, grounding, overcurrent protection, motor circuit wiring and others. This is a re-licensure class approved in the State of Iowa. The 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. class will include lunch at the JREC center. (CITR-1200-11093)

• “Transformers” on December 11 will cover theory, power distribution and the need for transformers. Many types of units and their uses will be discussed, with demonstrations and calculating methods for primary and secondary conductors, overcurrent protection and more. This class will be held from 2 to 7:30 p.m. Participants should bring a notebook, calculator and safety glasses, plus basic electrician’s tools for this hands-on training.(CITR-1700-11087)

• A December 11 course on “Electric Motors” will also cover theory and applications for these key parts of the repair and maintenance trades. Common types of motors covered include DC, single-phase and three-phase AC units. Calculations for motor conductors, overload units and overcurrent protection are also covered in this Saturday class, 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The instructor recommends bringing a notebook, calculator, safety glasses and core electrician’s tools for this class as well.
