Veteran coach leads #1-ranked team to milestone victory at Peoria tourney

It was frigid Midwest day and a road trip to Illinois. But just like a trusted vehicle’s odometer, the numbers rolled over to an even milestone for Kim Muhl. The Kirkwood Community College head women’s basketball coach notched career win number 600 as an early New Year’s present.

The Kirkwood Eagles beat Hutchinson Community College of Kansas 58-52 at Illinois Central Community College and their Cougar Holiday Classic on Dec. 30. The win moved the top-rated Eagles to 13-1 on the season. Tournament MVP Kalli Hansen of Olin, Iowa led Kirkwood scoring with 13 points. Staci Gillum of West Des Moines and Kari Goodchild of Van Horne, Iowa also made the all-tournament team.

Muhl now has a total career record of 600-112 and is ranked among the most prolific winning coaches in the NJCAA. Muhl has led the Eagles to numerous division titles and five national championships, including a “three-peat” series, 2007-09.
