Kirkwood Culinary Kitchen at NewBo City Market Opens Oct. 27

From organic cooking to marshmallow fondant and canning foods to homemade pizza, Kirkwood Culinary Kitchen at NewBo City Market has culinary offerings for a wide range of tastes.

When the doors of the NewBo City Market open at the end of October, Kirkwood Community College will unveil its newest teaching facility, with its widest range of culinary classes to date. The space, in the New Bohemia district of Cedar Rapids, will become a hub for culinary enthusiasts looking to have more fun with food.

“In this modern era of big box stores and fast food chains, food and cooking has become more of a product of convenience and less of an experience,” said Daniel Dennis, one of the Continuing Education instructors who will teach classes in the new space. “When the NewBo City Market opens, our new teaching space, combined with local vendors in the market, will help the community find healthy, more excited ways of cooking.”

With 1,500 square feet of teaching space, Kirkwood Culinary Kitchen at NewBo City Market will be the community’s learning center for hands-on culinary and nutrition education. There will be a teaching station and four learning stations. This allows students to practice skills and recipes as the instructor is teaching.

The demonstration area will have space for students to be seated around the demonstration island and at tables. A large TV screen will allow the instructor to zoom in on the counter and stovetops to ensure students can see first-hand the techniques and skills being taught.

“We can improve dinner every night with an ever-expanding range of culinary techniques and seasonal ingredients,” added Dennis. “Anyone can cook. It’s just a matter of practice and confidence.”

Kirkwood Culinary Kitchen at NewBo City Market will have free cooking demonstrations and food tastings on Saturday, October 27, from 1-4 p.m., during the grand opening weekend. The next day, October 28, 8-12 year olds can participate in Young Chefs Academy: White House Recipes, learning how to make dishes from the White House kitchen. Students will need to be registered for this class and tuition is $49.
