Cedar Rapids, Iowa (February 3, 2015)–Students earning their Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree or Associate of Science (A.S.) degree from Kirkwood Community College will soon be able to transfer the equivalent of two years of credit, or 15.5 course credits, toward a bachelor’s degree at Cornell College in Mount Vernon.

Kirkwood Community College President Mick Starcevich and Cornell College President Jonathan Brand signed the agreement on Jan. 30 on Kirkwood’s campus.

“Kirkwood and Cornell have had a long-standing relationship to provide innovative opportunities for students wishing to pursue their academic success,” said Bill Lamb, Kirkwood vice president, academic affairs.

“We look forward to having more of Kirkwood’s academically accomplished students join the Cornell community,” said Colleen Murphy, vice president of enrollment and dean of admission at Cornell College. “With this agreement, students who get their A.A. or A.S. from Kirkwood will have a chance to earn their B.A. at an amazing liberal arts college, without ever having to leave Iowa.”

To be eligible, students must meet Cornell’s admission criteria and have maintained a 2.5 cumulative grade point average based on transferable credit. General education requirements for transfer credits include courses in calculus-level mathematics or statistics, humanities, fine arts, foreign language and interdisciplinary thinking. Students with degrees other than the A.A. or A.S. degrees from Kirkwood will have their courses evaluated on a course-by-course basis.

This articulation agreement renews a strong partnership between Kirkwood and Cornell. The agreement reiterates the transferability of Kirkwood’s degrees to Cornell for pursuit of a bachelor’s degree. Kirkwood’s Advising and Transfer Center will assist students electing to attend Cornell following their graduation from Kirkwood. Cornell enrolls approximately 40 transfer students each academic year, including students who have completed their associate’s degree at Kirkwood.
