Kirkwood Community College will present the annual Summer Design Show Sunday, July 18 at the Horticulture and Floral Careers building on the Cedar Rapids Campus. Students will present original designs in the 2 to 4 p.m. program in Room 141.

Students in Kirkwood’s Floral Design program will present and comment on their original floral design pieces during the “Kirkwood Boulevard Florist” program. Students will present and describe the work behind their floral creations.

Guest commentator for the program is Danielle Thurn, a 2004 graduate of Edgewood-Colesburg High School and a 2006 Kirkwood graduate of both the Floral Careers and Landscape, Nursery & Garden Center Management programs. She is manager of The Buttercup Floral & Gifts business in Edgewood, her employer since Thurn’s high school years.

The July 18 show is free and open to the public. Refreshments and opportunities to inspect the designs are offered after the program.

Kirkwood’s Floral Design program is the only one of its kind in Iowa. Classes provide students with advanced training in floral design, plant identification and care, retail flower shop operations, advertising, visual merchandising, event planning, inventory control and order processing.
