Last night in Johnson Hall, both the Kirkwood men’s and women’s basketball teams won their opening round games in the Region XI tournament. They now move on to the semifinals.

The men’s team, who have the second seed in the tournament, fought a tough battle versus a feisty North Iowa Community College squad who took the Eagles to overtime. In the end, Kirkwood won by a score of 89-83. The Eagles were led by freshman J.C. Fuller and sophomore Kevin Hunter who scored 21 and 20 points respectively. Head coach Doug Wagemester’s team now moves on to face third seeded Ellsworth Community College on Friday night at 7 p.m in Johnson Hall.

The women didn’t need the extra time to move on to the semifinals. Hall of Fame Head Coach Kim Muhl coached his team to a 65-36 win over the Ellsworth Community College Panthers. Kirkwood was led by Whitney Rohrbach with 17 points.  The number one seeded Eagles now advance to play tournament semifinal and final hosts Southeastern Community College, the fifth seed, on Friday at 6 p.m in Keokuk.
