Storied program looks to get back to the national tournament in Muhl’s 25th season

Head Coach Kim Muhl begins his 25th season as the head coach of the Kirkwood women’s basketball team this Friday as the Eagles open the season versus Owens Community College at the Southeastern Classic in West Burlington, Iowa.

Muhl, who boasts a current all-time record of 709-128, has created an impressive legacy at Kirkwood including 22 regional finals, 15 national tournament berths and 6 national titles. In addition, he has been named Region XI Coach of the Year 15 times, the 2007 National Coach of the Year, and has already been named to the NJCAA Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame. However, Muhl isn’t concerned about all of the accolades right now.

“All of the success we’ve had as a program is a nice reward for the work we’ve put in year after year,” said Muhl. “But all of that is in the past. Previous accomplishments don’t win you championships. Our focus right now is this year’s squad and it’s potential. If we want to get back to the national tournament, we have to get to work.”

The Eagles’ three sophomores will need to provide much needed leadership for a young but talented team. Ariel Sneed (Harvey, Ill.), Danielle Woolfolk (Chicago, Ill.) and Mikayla Fallon (East Moline, Ill.) are the veteran presence on the squad.

The incoming freshman class comes to Johnson Hall from all over the country. Katelyn Tuttle (LeClaire, Iowa), Cuyla Hall (Oak Park, Ill.), Taylor Silva (Bellevue, Neb.), Tyra Polite (Upper Darby, Pa.), Kirsten Larson (Belvidere, Ill.), Hanna Haynes (Doud, Iowa), Anna Martensen (Belvidere, Ill.), Peyton Bockholt (LaPorte City, Iowa), Zoe Kelso (Rock Island, Ill.), Cassidy Clark (Coal Valley, Ill.), and Breannie Robinson (Oakland, Calif.) make up the freshman class this year. Carla Marfe (Queens, N.Y.) is redshirting.

“We have a young team this year,” said Muhl. “But even though they lack experience, they make up for it in raw talent. Our job on the coaching staff is to help them find their potential. If we can do that the sky is the limit.”

The Eagles begin the season on the road this Friday with a 1 p.m. matchup with Owens Community College at the Southeastern Classic. Kirkwood’s first home game is set for November 8 against Joliet Junior College. Tipoff is 7:30 p.m. in Johnson Hall.
