Cedar Rapids, Iowa (February 5, 2014)—Former FDNY Lieutenant Joe Torrillo, who was buried alive twice in rescue efforts on September 11, 2001, is the humorous and inspiring keynote speaker at the 2014 East Central Iowa Safety and Health Conference on Thursday, February 27.

On that fateful day Lt. Torrillo was en route to an event when he witnessed the first plane crash into the World Trade Center, tower one. An expert in building structure, Torrillo knew the collapse was certain. He made his way to the fire station, suited up in a fellow firefighter’s gear and headed to the tower determined to rescue those stranded at the top.

In a valiant effort Lt. Torrillo became engulfed by debris. Rescue personnel were able to locate him and quickly set him aboard a boat sailing to a local hospital. Remarkably while awaiting transport, Lt. Torrillo was buried again by the collapse of the second tower. It was not until 40 minutes later that rescuers again found him. He was then rushed to a New Jersey hospital for treatment of internal injuries and major head trauma.

Lt. Torrillo was placed on the official missing list and was assumed to have been missing in action. Fortunately hospital personnel identified him and his family was notified.

Today Lt. Torrillo, who is now retired, shares his story of perseverance using humor in an effort to make the country the re-United States of America. At Kirkwood’s conference that focuses on safety and health issues in the workplace, Lt. Torrillo will share his incredible story of survival, his knowledge of fire safety and building structure and sustainability.

The 2014 East Central Iowa Safety and Health Conference is a one-day training conference for business and industry. The conference is open to the public. More information is available at www.kirkwood.edu/ce.
