Kirkwood Community College’s Iowa City Campus
A dark time in world history comes to light at an Iowa City lecture and book reading. Patrick Hicks, Ph.D., the writer-in-residence at Augustana College (S.D.) will share what he learned about Nazi death camps while researching his book “The Commandant of Lubizec.”
The lecture and readings will take place in the Commons area of Kirkwood Community College’s Iowa City Campus on Friday, March 1. The lecture will run from 10 a.m.-12 p.m., and Hicks will read from his book and other works from 4-5:15 p.m.
Hicks visited some of the worst Nazi death camps over the past several years, researching his fiction novel, which he said is “A harrowing account of a death camp that never actually existed but easily could have in the Nazi state.” During the lecture he will discuss what happened at Auschwitz, Belzec, Sobibor and Treblinka, all concentration camps in Poland, as well as discuss what the Holocaust means today.
Hicks is the author of five poetry collections, most recently “Finding the Gossamer” and “This London,” both from Ireland’s acclaimed press, Salmon Poetry. A former visiting fellow at Oxford, he has lived in Northern Ireland, England, Germany and Spain, but has returned to his Midwestern roots.
