October Student of the Month: Natalie Jones

What is your background? Hometown? High school? Family members?:  I am from a military family and lived in several places before making Iowa City my hometown. I’m a Senior at City High School in Iowa City and I’m the oldest of three children!

What brought you to Kirkwood and why?: I heard about the Kirkwood Regional Center at the University of Iowa through my guidance counselor at City High School. After I learned a little about what it was, I decided to visit the Linn County Regional Center, which is where I met Angela Mosley. When I was walking through the halls, I was looking at the photography on the walls. I was amazed with some of the images other students had captured. When Angela saw me looking at the photos, she came over and told me that she knew I had a creative soul. Honestly, that is what brought me to the Regional Center.

What are you studying and what interests you about it?: I am interested in studying Marketing. People may think marketing is all about selling an item and it can be, but I dream of working for a non-profit. I don’t just want to sell an item; I want to sell an idea. I want to make a difference in the world through marketing, since I do not have the skill, or the stomach, to be a doctor.

What activities are you involved in off of campus? What are they and why do they interest you?: I am part of the City High School yearbook staff and I work at Oaknoll Retirement Home in the dining hall on the weekends. Oaknoll is an amazing place to work. Most of the residents are former University of Iowa professors, which makes conversations really fun and interesting.

What do you do for fun?: Photography is something I have always loved, but this past summer I began to take it more seriously. I had an amazing opportunity to attend the University of Iowa Journalism Workshop where I was part of the photojournalism camp. During the week at the camp, I began to feel more confident with my skills.

Where do you see yourself in five years?: In five years, I expect to be finished with college with a degree in Marketing and moving to downtown Chicago. I would love to be working for a non-profit doing their social media and also running their ad campaigns.
