Movin’ and Shakin’ returns plus many opportunities to get involved on campus

Kirkwood Community College will welcome new and returning students with a week full of fun events taking place on main campus. Welcome week will be held August 18 through 22 giving students a chance to interact with each other and become acquainted with Kirkwood’s campus and the Cedar Rapids area.

The signature Movin’ and Shakin’ kick off event will begin on Monday, August 18 at 2 pm in front of Linn Hall. For three hours students can enjoy free food, music, games, prizes and much more. To provide a little taste, there will be a dunk tank, horizontal bungee jumping, bouncy boxing, funnel cakes and sno cones.

During this time information on local job openings will be available as well as info on various campus clubs and organizations. “In addition to meeting new people and making friends this is a great opportunity to look for a part-time job,” said Tera Smith, Kirkwood admissions advisor. Over 2,500 students are expected to attend this event with the first 1000 receiving free t-shirts.

Classes begin on Tuesday at 8 am. That evening each student housing complex will be holding their own gathering from 5 pm to 7 pm to greet the students. This also allows students to get to know their neighbors.

Wednesday, Hypnotist Brian Imbus of Dubuque is back to perform at 7 p.m. in Ballantyne Auditorium. Imbus is popular for providing entertainment of this kind for the college crowd.

An outdoor concert will be held on the 21 at 8:30 in the evening. Supersize 7 is bringing exciting music for everyone to enjoy outside of Benton Hall by the bookstore. In case of rain the concert will be moved to Ballantyne Auditorium.

To end the week, a campus cook out will be held on Friday, August 22. At 11 a.m. food and pop will be given out in front of Iowa Hall. This will give students another possibility to meet other students and Kirkwood’s faculty and staff. Everyone is welcome.

“Welcome week is a great way for students coming from all counties in Iowa and several states and countries to come together on campus and meet each other in a fun and relaxed setting,” added Smith. “We devote this entire week of activities to assist the students with the transition into college life and to help them become more comfortable with campus.”
