Linn Hall information sessions will include faculty leading 2009-10 program travels

When the faculty and staff at Kirkwood Community College say students can “Start Here, Go Anywhere”—they mean not only good careers, but visiting far corners of the globe. To emphasize that point, the college’s International Studies office will host a Study Abroad Expo Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 1-2.

Students, staff and faculty alike can learn about Kirkwood Study Abroad opportunities, educational benefits and expanded scholarship support for students interested in these enriching learning programs.

“We are pleased to tell students that our Study Abroad Scholarships have been increased to $750 per student this year,” said International Studies Director Dawn Wood. “We appreciate the belief in the value of these programs from our Kirkwood Foundation. Many hundreds of our students have taken learning trips over the past decade or more. We are committed to support as many students as possible in the years ahead.”

This year Kirkwood faculty will lead students on study abroad programs to London, Costa Rica, Rome, Australia, Japan, Singapore and several other countries. In the past decade students have learned while traveling across five continents.

The Expo will be held in the lobby of Linn Hall on the Kirkwood Cedar Rapids campus. Displays will include brochures describing the dozen-plus travel programs, photos from previous programs, instructions on how to apply and scholarship applications. Several Kirkwood faculty members will also be available to explain study and travel plans for the 2009-10 Study Abroad programs.

While many Kirkwood Study Abroad trips are focused on specific academic programs and majors, the trips are open to all interested students, whether Kirkwood or other area colleges. Students have explored Renaissance arts in Italy and experienced Australian restaurant management among dozens of learning journeys.

“Members of the general public have also participated in the trips for college credit and personal enrichment,” Wood added.

The Kirkwood Study Abroad Expo displays are open to all, Monday and Tuesday, Dec.1-2; 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day.
