Kirkwood, African-American Museum to create “authentic” Underground Railroad experience

Imagine you are a Freedom Seeker – a runaway slave traveling Iowa’s Underground Railroad in 1853. On this journey, you will travel under cover of darkness, encountering slave catchers and bounty hunters, to reach Canada. Will your group make it to freedom or be captured and returned to your owners?

Let the African American Museum of Iowa take you back in time to experience the journey’s perils and triumphs in this living history event. Journey to Freedom is held at Wickiup Hill Outdoor Learning Center. Please wear comfortable, all-weather clothes and be prepared to walk approximately two miles of uneven terrain. Due to intense subject matter, this program is for individuals 12 years and older.

Three performances are scheduled for each of the four performance dates. This African American Museum of Iowa program is made possible by a grant from the Witwer Fund-Linn Co. Bd. of Supervisors and in collaboration with Wickiup Hill Outdoor Learning Center.

To register for one of these performances, go to the Kirkwood Community College Continuing Education website or call their office at 319-398-5529. Admission is $15, payable to Kirkwood Community College.

Performances are scheduled for the following dates/times:

• Friday, September 12, 8:00-9:30 p.m.
