Eagles get first round bye, home court advantage throughout tournament

Cedar Rapids, Iowa (March 1, 2016)-The Kirkwood men’s basketball team is the number one seed in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II Region XI Men’s Basketball Tournament. The Eagles have a first round bye and home court advantage throughout regionals.

Head Coach Bryan Petersen, now in his third season, has guided the team to its best season yet under his leadership. The Eagles, ranked sixth in the nation, went 25-4 overall and 10-2 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC). The team ended the conference schedule in a three-way tie with the Southwestern Spartans and the Iowa Lakes Lakers. The three top teams split their head-to-head contests. Kirkwood earned the number one seed in the regional tournament based off of strength of schedule.

Petersen’s squad will play the fifth-seeded Iowa Central Tritons (11-12, 4-8) in the semifinals. That game will be played on Thursday (3/3) in Cedar Rapids beginning at 7:30 p.m. Kirkwood won both regular season meetings versus the Tritons.
