Culinary Arts students will compete, demonstrate in downtown Cedar Rapids

Despite record flooding in downtown Cedar Rapids, hundreds of persevering vendors have kept the Downtown Farmer’s Market events going. This Saturday, Oct. 4 marks the last market event and thousands of people are expected to stop by the blocks around Greene Square Park to snap up the festive fall goodies.

Among the participants are some Kirkwood Community College Culinary Arts students. Chef Melanie Ewalt said the students will form teams and do an “Iron Chef” kind of competition.

“Those students involved are Hillary Reinert, Eric Ehler, Nate Woodley, Luke Peters, Noah Bowles and Micah Melton. We are also pleased to have our visiting Australian culinary students from Box Hill Institute in Melbourne taking part. They are Shelley Strauss, Nicolas Thomas and Ashley Pyke,” Ewalt said.

The competition will start at 8:30 a.m. and will run until 9:30. Each team will be provided with the same basket of food.

“I get to select those items that morning from the farmer’s market,” Ewalt added. The students will also be cooking lamb chops from a local farmer that sells at the farmer’s markets in the area.
