WASHINGTON, Iowa (Oct. 20, 2025)–Kirkwood Community College’s Workplace Learning Connection (WLC), a nationally recognized work-based learning organization supporting middle school and high school students, will be hosting the Washington County High School Career Fair at the Iowa Army National Guard Readiness Center in Washington on Wednesday, October 29. More than 475 high school students from Washington, Mid-Prairie, and Highland high schools will explore future career opportunities at the event.

The new event is designed to connect students with local employers and showcase in-demand careers in healthcare, agriculture, manufacturing, business, skilled trades and more. More than 20 local businesses are slated to participate, providing students with a chance to make professional connections, ask questions, and learn about part-time or post-graduation opportunities right in their own communities.

According to WLC Event Coordinator Brittany Slaubaugh, engaging area students early plays a pivotal role in economic vitality, especially in more rural communities like Washington County.

“Our team is thrilled to bring a new event like this to Washington County,” said Slaubaugh. “The response from the business community has been amazing. They’re eager to connect with students because workforce development and talent pipelines are top priorities for every industry right now. This fair allows students to see the wide variety of meaningful careers available close to home. We want them to envision their futures here in Washington County, because the success of our local workforce depends on engaging and inspiring the next generation.”

By partnering with local schools and employers, WLC continues to create hands-on learning experiences that prepare students for success after high school and strengthens the region’s economic future.
