What is your background?: I grew up in DeWitt Iowa, and lived there my entire life until I came to Kirkwood. I attended Central Dewitt High School, where I found my passion for vet med. My mom is a registered veterinary technician, and my dad is a chemical engineer. So I grew up with tons of pets, and knowledge about them.

What brought you to Kirkwood and why?: I decided to attend Kirkwood purely for their Veterinary Technician program. People speak very highly of their level of education and the hands-on aspects of the program as well.

What is your program of study and what interests you about it?: I am currently a second-year Veterinary Technician student. I love the way the program allows the students to be as hands-on as possible. I am a very hands-on learner, so for me to be able to practice everything on real animals under close supervision is a very rewarding feeling.

Are you involved in anything on campus?: I was a part of the Kirkwood Concert Band during my first two years attending. I had played the French horn for 11 years prior to attending college and wanted to continue to play after high school. Unfortunately, my schedule this year is far too busy to continue the band, but I loved the time I got. I am also a work study member for the vet tech program.

Are you involved in anything off campus?: I work as a veterinary assistant at VCA Edgewood Animal Hospital, where I did my veterinary technician internship over the summer.

What do you do for fun?: Some of my hobbies include cooking/baking, crocheting, and going hiking. I enjoy staying in and watching Grey’s Anatomy more than anything.

Where do you see yourself in five years?: In 5 years, I hope to be a registered veterinary technician at a large zoo. Over the past year, I have had a growing passion for zoo medicine, and I would love to work on a huge variety of animals doing so.
