CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (July 15, 2026)–Recent Kirkwood Community College graduate Lama Mohamed has been selected as a 2026 Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholar, earning one of the nation’s most prestigious and competitive scholarships for community college students seeking to complete a bachelor’s degree.

Mohamed was one of just 60 students, and the only one from the state of Iowa, selected nationwide from more than 1,300 applicants. The scholarship provides last-dollar funding of up to $55,000 per year for up to three years to help recipients complete a bachelor’s degree at an accredited four-year institution. In addition to financial support, scholars receive personalized advising, opportunities for internships and study abroad, graduate school support, and access to a nationwide network of fellow Cooke Scholars and alumni.

Originally from Sudan, Mohamed came to the United States in 2023 and quickly established herself as a standout student at Kirkwood through her academic excellence, leadership and commitment to serving others.

During her time at Kirkwood, Mohamed served as president of the STEM Club, participated in Student Leadership Council, and worked as a peer mentor, helping fellow students navigate college life. She balanced those leadership roles while maintaining an outstanding academic record while preparing to transfer following her time at Kirkwood. Mohamed will be attending Purdue University in the fall.

The Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship recognizes exceptional community college students with financial need who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, leadership, perseverance and service. This year’s scholars were selected from a semifinalist pool of 485 students representing community colleges across the country, making the award one of the most selective transfer scholarships in higher education.

Mohamed’s recognition reflects Kirkwood’s commitment to helping students achieve their educational goals and successfully transfer to four-year institutions. Through personalized support, leadership opportunities and a strong academic foundation, Kirkwood continues to prepare students to excel at the next stage of their education and in their future careers.
