CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Aug. 31, 2026)–Kirkwood Community College’s Workplace Learning Connection (WLC) has opened the first job shadow application window of the 2026-27 school year. High school sophomores, juniors and seniors in Benton, Cedar, Iowa, Johnson, Jones, Linn and Washington counties are encouraged to apply. Applications will be accepted now through Sept. 23 at 3 p.m.
Students can choose from more than 200 job shadow opportunities across a wide range of industries, allowing them to explore careers that align with their interests. Participation is free, making it an accessible way for students to gain valuable career insight while connecting with local employers and professionals.
“This is an incredible opportunity for students to make more informed decisions about their future by connecting directly with local employers,” said WLC Director Kristine Bullock. “A few hours spent in a workplace can open a student’s eyes to career possibilities they may never have considered. These experiences give students a firsthand look at careers while helping employers inspire and connect with the region’s future workforce.”
Job shadowing gives students the opportunity to explore careers that match their interests, connect classroom learning to real-world workplaces and build valuable professional connections. During an excused school absence, students spend two to four hours alongside local professionals, gaining firsthand insight into what a typical workday looks like and the skills needed to succeed in a particular field. These experiences help students make more informed decisions about their education and future while giving them a better understanding of career opportunities available in their own communities.
WLC is a nationally recognized leader in work-based learning. The program partners with area school districts and local businesses to coordinate career exploration experiences for middle and high school students. Through job shadows, internships and career-related events, WLC prepares the future workforce by connecting today’s students with tomorrow’s careers.
