CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Sept. 1, 2026)–The Kirkwood Foundation has concluded its “The Community’s College – The Community’s Future” fundraising campaign with a $2 million gift from the Russell & Ann Gerdin Charitable Foundation. The gift brings the campaign total to more than $22 million, making it the largest fundraising effort in Kirkwood Community College history.
The gift will support the first phase of lab reconstruction and equipment upgrades for Kirkwood’s healthcare programs. The second phase of that project would begin following voter approval of the college’s Nov. 3 bond measure. Funds will be used to create additional flexible lab spaces to help meet demand for qualified healthcare professionals. In recognition of the Gerdin family’s support, Kirkwood will rename the Health Sciences wing of Linn Hall in honor of Russell and Ann Gerdin. Details of the renaming will be announced at a later date.
“This generous gift will help Kirkwood meet the growing demand for well-trained healthcare professionals for years to come,” said Kirkwood President Kristie Fisher. “By investing in modern learning spaces and equipment, the Russell & Ann Gerdin Charitable Foundation is helping ensure our students receive the education and hands-on experience they need to serve our communities. Their belief in Kirkwood’s mission will have a lasting impact on both our college and the region.”
Launched in April 2025, the campaign surpassed its $15 million goal by more than 40% and exceeded the college’s previous fundraising record of $18.7 million, set in 2013. The campaign focused on scholarships, healthcare education and workforce development throughout Kirkwood’s seven-county service area.

The campaign also expanded scholarship opportunities for students including those pursuing diploma and certificate programs. Donors also fulfilled the $1 million Match Challenge for the Presidential and Leaders for Tomorrow Scholarships, increasing access to education and supporting future student leaders.
In all, 1,620 donors contributed to the campaign. Lead gifts of more than $500,000 also came from the John & Cindy Bloomhall Family Foundation, Susan Elliott-Bryan, Hugh Shaw, the Tippie Family and an anonymous donor.
