Donor’s gift provides another choice for Phi Theta Kappa students
For some of Kirkwood Community College’s most academically proficient graduates, there is another avenue of opportunity for their four-year degrees. A class of 1956 Cornell alumnus has given the Mount Vernon, Iowa based college $200,000 to create an endowed scholarship for Kirkwood Community College students transferring to Cornell.
The donors wish to remain anonymous. The scholarship will benefit Kirkwood students transferring to Cornell College who are members of Phi Theta Kappa, the nation’s premiere honor society for two-year colleges.
“This scholarship will provide Kirkwood students access to the extraordinary opportunities in the classroom, on the campus and around the world that are uniquely available at Cornell College,” said Peter Wilch, vice-president for alumni and college advancement. “We are pleased to deepen our partnership with Kirkwood Community College.”
“We are so pleased to add this new Cornell scholarship to the many supportive choices our graduates can make for their next educational step,” said Kirkwood President Mick Starcevich. “For years Cornell College has built great careers and enriched young minds with its unique One Course at a Time approach. This program is especially welcome for our Phi Theta Kappa graduates, some of every year’s most gifted and inspired Kirkwood scholars. At Kirkwood we tell our students they can ‘Start Here, Go Anywhere.’ The quality, supportive environment of Cornell College is a superb, close-by ‘Anywhere.’ Thanks to everyone at the Mt. Vernon campus for this new opportunity for our grads.”
