Kirkwood, UI Osher Lifelong Learning Institute set “Second Half of Life” program

“As we enter our mature years, we stand on the brink of…what?”

That is the key theme of “Creating the Second Half of Your Life,” a one-day conference presented at the Kirkwood Center for Continuing Education. The Nov. 5 program is a joint project of Kirkwood Community College and the University of Iowa’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.

Keynote speakers and presenters for the conference are Alan Bernstein and John Trauth, nationally recognized authors, speakers and authorities on creative planning and solutions for midlife change. The two key presenters are co-authors of Your Retirement, Your Way, recently noted as the number one selling retirement planning guide at Amazon.com.

Bernstein is a psychotherapist who has spent three decades helping people develop the lives and careers they want. His portion of the program will help participants develop their own personal profile and guide to “creating the second half of your life.” Trauth is a strategic and financial planner known for helping people “understand how to afford the lifestyles they want.” Trauth’s planning guidelines will help participants incorporate the insights gained from Bernstein’s psychological profiles into personal strategic plans for creating a meaningful and fulfilling life.

Key topics of the conference will include:

• Five major “myths” that distort realistic perceptions about later life;

• Psychological preparations for change;

• Understanding your personality to determine what lifestyle will allow satisfaction and fulfillment; and

• Creating a “NewLife Vision” based on personal lifestyle and developing the initial personal strategy to turn that vision into reality.

Other portions of the day-long event will include a group “memory exercise” plus breakout sessions on healthy eating, promising midlife/post-retirement careers, and preparing for expected and unexpected changes in mature life stages. A catered lunch is available during the conference.

Events are set for 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. with two different workshop series tracks based on personal interests. The events will include a conference summary at mid-afternoon, allowing attendees to contemplate the “take-aways” of the day.
Registration for the Nov. 5 Creating the Second Half of Your Life conference is $95, including lunch. Osher Lifelong Learning Institute members may register for the reduced price of $80. Registrations may be taken by phone at (319) 398-1022, or toll-free at (800) 332-883. A brochure with complete information on the conference is also available at those numbers.
